Internal Scum Channel Grilles

Swimming Pools come in all shapes and sizes, from stunning infinity pools to your back garden paddling pools (or festival coolers depending on your age bracket!). Most UK swimming pools though, are rectangular shaped with one of four water-recovery systems.

This month we have a top tip for continuous-water recovery systems. Specifically, internal scum channel pools – as shown below.

The continuous water recovery systems have an advantage over their sump grille counterparts as water contaminants, such as oils, often remain in the top part of the pool. These internal channels also give weaker swimmers something to hold on to when they get out of their depth. However in many older pools, we find the grilles located within the channels do not pass the recommended maximum aperture size. The example below shows an internal scum channel outlet posing a cutting hazard (due to the broken fin, seen on the right) and an entrapment hazard to all children who enjoy poking their fingers into any crevice found within a swimming pool.

Despite their seemingly awkward location, Commercial and Specialised Diving are able to fit high density polyethylene (HDPE) grilles over these outlets – maintaining function while eliminating any risk to pool users. So if your pool has internal scum channels give us a ring to have your outlets made safe.
