Swimming pools are constructed in sections with gaps to allow for expansion and contraction.
Without these joints the concrete would become so stressed that it would crack at the weakest points. Construction joints are used to prevent these cracks from happening.
When a pool is initially constructed the joints are usually filled with bitumen or foam and topped off with epoxy or mastic to seal the surface to keep water out. This uppermost layer is called the expansion joint.
Typically the expansion joints can be found in the corners of the pool, the floor and the walls at regular intervals around 6 meters apart or less.
Expansion joints often continue beyond the pool edge to the poolside floor.
Over time, the expansion joint can wear down, particularly where it is subject to heavy footfall, such as in the shallow end. If the expansion joints become too worn, water can leak out of the pool. Sharp tile edges can be exposed and cause surrounding tile adhesive to fail as the water ingresses below.

This can be conducted underwater with a special underwater material that is long lasting and very hard wearing. Using this method, expansion joints can be replaced and made as good as new without having to drain your swimming pool!
