Commercial & Specialised Diving’s services were called upon last month to carry out a Maritime and Coastguard Agency in-water hull and running gear survey on the SS Shieldhall. The historic ship is believed to be the largest working steam ship in Northern Europe – weighing in at an impressive 1,792 tons, a 13 ½ ft draught and measuring 268 ft from bow to stern.
CSD provided a 5-man dive team with maritime expertise, armed with video cameras to carry out the underwater survey in open water off the Dorset coast.
Our experienced divers successfully completed a sizable hull and running gear inspection. The inspection was fully video-recorded and Commercial and Specialised Diving were pleased to report that the SS Shieldhall, a member of the National Historic Fleet, had passed with flying colours.

The ship is owned and operated entirely by voluntary effort.
